  1. Interdependence 4th Grade Science

  2. Let’s fill in a KWL chart about INTERDEPENDENCE together:

  3. Interdependence • All life is interdependent and interacts with the environment. • Interdependent= depending on each other • Interact= to act on each other

  4. Guiding Question • How do living things interactwith one another and with the non-living elements of their environment?

  5. GLE 0407.2.1 Analyze the effects of changes inthe environment on the stability of an ecosystem.

  6. Vocabulary Words • symbiosis • predator • parasite • parasitism • predation • mimicry • niche • natural selection • host • warning colors • camouflage • competition • prey

  7. prey • the organism that is killed

  8. predator • an organism that is hunting the prey

  9. predation • an interaction in which one organism kills and eats another organism

  10. Let’s watch a video about predation:

  11. parasite • The organism that benefits from parasitism

  12. parasitism • involves one organism living on or inside another organism and harming it

  13. host • the organism that the parasite lives on or in

  14. camouflage • an organism’s ability to resemble its environment

  15. Let’s take a closer look:

  16. natural selection • the process that involves changes that make organisms better suited to their environment

  17. symbiosis • a close relationship between two species that benefits at least one of the species

  18. mimicry • organism’s resemblance to another organism to fool predators into staying away

  19. competition • the struggle between organisms to survive in a habitat with limited resources

  20. warning colors • a defense strategy in which an organism draw attention to itself

  21. niche • an organisms particular role, or how it makes its living

  22. Let’s take a closer look:

  23. The THREE major types of interactions among organisms: • Competition—struggle to survive • Predation—eats & kills • Symbiosis—beneficial relationship

  24. Let’s watch a video about life in a coral reef:

  25. SPI 0407.2.1 Recognize the impact ofpredation and competition on an ecosystem. • Let’s check out some HABITATS: http://www.nationalgeographic.com/geography-action/habitats.html

  26. SPI 0407.2.1 Recognize the impact ofpredation and competition on an ecosystem. • Let’s check out some more HABITATS: http://www.panda.org/about_our_earth/ecoregions/about/habitat_types/habitats/

  27. SPI 0407.2.1 Recognize the impact ofpredation and competition on an ecosystem. • Let’s visit some different animals’ habitats: http://www.uen.org/utahlink/activities/view_activity.cgi?activity_id=3792

  28. 0407.2.1 Analyze how an increase ordecrease in competition or predation affects an ecosystem. • Let’s reconstruct a barren prairie: http://www.bellmuseum.org/distancelearning/prairie/build/index.html

  29. 0407.2.2 Design a simple experiment toillustrate the effects of competition, predation, and interdependency among living things. • Let’s play a game about animal habitats: http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/scienceclips/ages/8_9/habitats.shtml
