Colonial Economics • Colonial economics differed according to the region: • Southern Colonies • Plantation agriculture • Middle Colonies • Mixed agriculture, crafts, trade • New England • Mixed agriculture, fishing, trade • Each required a different type of labor • All were labor intensive societies

  6. Labor and the Chesapeake • Chesapeake had a need for labor • Tobacco is a highly labor intensive crop • Poor Man’s Crop • Required bodies in the field • High Death Rates • Average life expectancy -- 6 years • Impacted workforce • Impacted role of women

  7. Recruitment Devices • Headright System • 50 acres granted to all new free settlers • 50 acres granted to all who brought a settler • Indenture System for the poor • Landowners paid for the journey • Indentured Servants worked for 4 to 7 years

  8. Work Life • Indentured Life was a struggle • Required to put in long hours, week in, week out • Unpaid labor • Subject to the discipline of the landowner (the Master) • Received freedom dues when contract lapsed • 50 acres of land • Clothing, seed, and tools • At some times, guns
