Southern Environmental Association (SEA) COMPACT Partner • Responsible for day to day management of the sites – 2 of the 7 sites • enforcement • public use management • education and outreach • scientific monitoring and research • Site Focal Point for Belize • Work with 8 stakeholder communities that directly depend on resources of MPAs • Fishing • Tourism

Strengths COMPACT Partnerships in Belize: NGOs, CBOs and other WHS agencies • COMPACT partnerships have allowed PA managers to: • increase organizational capacities • support community-based initiatives directly linked to PA management • increase stakeholder engagement • COMPACT partnership with Southern Environmental Association (SEA) to: • establish site management; • create stakeholder awareness; • provide community training in alternative livelihood activities • Dive masters • Fly fishing guides 6

Strengths COMPACT support to SEA Community Stewardship of BBRWHS • COMPACT support to SEA for engagement of local communities in meaningful PA management decisions for: • Expansion of the no-take zone • Focused community stakeholder consultations • Identification of priority areas for full protection (expansion of no-take or replenishment zones) • Mapping of the proposed areas • identification of potential economic alternatives for those directly impacted by the expansion • – funded the first phase of mari-culture initiative (seaweed) 7
