Linear Perspective Linear Perspective: Using lines based on strict rules of geometry that gives the illusion of depth and distance. Horizon Line: The actual horizon is where the earth meets the sky or the sky meets the ocean. Parallel: Lines are lines that are always the same distance from each other. They never meet. Picture Plane: The picture plane is the actual surface of a drawing or painting. Perpendicular: Perpendicular means connecting at a right angle or 90 degree angle. Absolute vertical and absolute horizontal lines are perpendicular. Vertical: A line that is perpendicular to the horizon line. A vertical line is "standing up". Horizontal: A line is parallel to the horizon line. A horizontal line is "lying down". Eye Level: A level that coincides with the viewers eyes Vanishing Point: A point at which parallel lines receding into space appear to meet.
