Notebooks • Students need to have a notebook for each subject. • All class notes are taken in notebooks. • Notebooks are collected and given a grade. • Incomplete or missing notebooks will effect the overall grade in each subject.
Homework • Homework is given Monday through Thursday nights to reinforce curriculum taught in school. • Students should have an hours worth of homework per day. • Homework is due first thing every school day. • If homework is not completed, the student will call home. • They will spend the morning recess on the wall, allowing them time to finish incomplete assignments. • If incomplete work becomes a habit, additional actions may become necessary.
Homework Pass • Each student is given one homework pass. • No consequences for not having homework complete. • The assignment is due, completed, the next day. • If turned in later than this it is considered late, and it will not be possible to get full credit on the assignment. • Additional homework passes may be purchased by students for 40 tickets.
Late Work • Unless a student is absent, work must be turned in on time. • Late work will not be given full credit. • In the third trimester late work will not be accepted for any reason other than school absence.
Multiplication Facts • Each student know their multiplication facts through 12 without hesitation. • Students are required to pass 100 math facts in 3 minutes, with 100% accuracy. • Success on math facts goes directly on the student’s report card. • First trimester requirements: • N- on the 5’s or anything lower • S- on 6’s through 12’s • E- on All (Multiplication facts 0-12 or division) • As a reminder, an N on a report card will prevent a student from being on honor roll.
Writing • Students will be writing every day! • Your child will be responsible for writing a 5 paragraph essay approximately every two weeks. • Essays may be typed, but parents need to write a note saying the student typed it.
Reports • Students will research and write several reports this year. • Students will receive an information sheet with the criteria for the report. • I will post report criteria on my website. • Research reports will be given with plenty of time to complete them, usually two weeks. • Reports may require additional time at night or on the weekends.
Silent Reading and Book Reports • Students are expected to have a silent reading book at all times. • Book report books must be: • a chapter book, • 100 pages or more • at their Accelerated Reading (AR) level. • Book reports will be assigned approximately every two weeks. • Format will be handed out with enough time for completion.
Current Events • Each student has been assigned to a Current Events group. • Every Friday, one group of students will present their current event to the class. • This is an individual presentation. • Students are to read a current article from a magazine or newspaper, summarize it, and present it to the class. • Articles should be: • Current, major events, • Not sports highlights, • Not weather reports • Grades are assigned based on content of the presentation, as well as on the presentation itself.
Instrumental Music • Instrumental music is in the morning. • Students will miss math and language arts. • Students are responsible for making up the work they miss on their own.
Agenda • It is your child’s responsibility to write in his/her agenda every day!
Honor roll • Honor roll is based on grades. • 3.0-3.49 Honor Roll • 3.5-4.0 Principle’s Honor Roll • No N’s on report card- including behavior • Each grade is assigned a point value. • A-4 points • B-3 points • C-2 points • D- 1 point • All points are averaged
President’s award • National award with specific guidelines. • For a child to be eligible for the President’s Award: • a score of 570 or higher on their 4th grade CST’s in either Language Arts or Math • Principle’s Honor Roll (3.5+) for all three trimesters of 5th grade. • No exceptions!
Graduation • We do not have a 5th grade graduation. • We have an end of the year celebration.
Movies • We watch academically appropriate movies in class from time to time (National Treasure, Shiloh). • I try to keep all movies G rated. • From time to time, I do show PG rated movies.
Cell Phones • Many students have cell phones. • They may bring the phone to school as long as it is not seen or heard. • Student are not to use cell phones during school hours. • No calls • No texting • If this policy is violated, I will take the phone. • It will be returned at the end of the school day.
Birthdays and Parties • If you want to celebrate your child’s birthday at school, please let me know a couple days ahead of time. • This assures that there will be time set aside to celebrate with your child. • All treats should be store bought. • If you are interested in planning or assisting with class parties, please let me know.
Toys • All toys, including balls, electronic devices, and trading cards are not allowed at school. • If I see a toy I will give the student the opportunity to put the toy in their backpack. • If the toy is a continued distraction, I will take it. The child may get the toy back at the end of the day. • If toys continue to be a problem, I will take them and a parent may pick them up from me.
