Outline • What is organic aquaculture? • Principles to practice - key feed ingredients • Options for the future
Soil Association • The UK's leading environmental charity promoting sustainable, organic farming and championing human health. • Funded by members, donations, grants and from the certification of organic food
Certification • Over 70% of organic products that are sold in the UK carry the Soil Association symbol • Over 4000 farms and businesses are certified by Soil Association Certification Limited
Organic principles • International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM) • Health - Organic Agriculture should sustain and enhance the health of soil, plant, animal, human and planet as one and indivisible. • Ecology - Organic Agriculture should be based on living ecological systems and cycles, work with them, emulate them and help sustain them
Fairness - Organic Agriculture should build on relationships that ensure fairness with regard to the common environment and life opportunities • Care - Organic Agriculture should be managed in a precautionary and responsible manner to protect the health and well-being of current and future generations and the environment. • www.ifoam.org
Standards - aquatic ingredients • You must use aquatic ingredients: • of organic origin, or failing that • from wild marine resources that we recognise as independently certified as sustainable (such as by the Marine Stewardship Council), or failing that • made from the by-products of wild caught fish for human consumption
Fishmeal and oil • Trimmings and filleting wastes of fish already caught for human consumption
“the first major effort to address the sustainability of feed-grade fisheries” • “perhaps the most unique sustainable seafood partnership yet”
Pigments Vegetable ingredients Antioxidants Other key ingredients
Short and long term plans • Ingredient diversification • Farmed marine ingredients?
Summary • The approach to organic feed formulation is dictated by the principles of organic farming • Locally sourced waste products of fish already caught for human consumption • Organic vegetable ingredients • Natural additives where possible • A truly sustainable feed continues to be the goal
