CD R • “A CD-R (Compact Disc-Recordable) is a variation of the Compact Disk invented by Philips and Sony. CD-R is a Write Once Read Many (WORM) optical medium (though the whole disk does not have to be entirely written in the same session) and retains a high level of compatibility with standard CD readers (unlike CD-RW which can be rewritten but has much lower compatibility and the discs are considerably more expensive).”
CD RW • “Compact Disc ReWritable (CD-RW) is a rewritable optical disc format. Known as CD-Erasable (CD-E) during its development, CD-RW was introduced in 1997, and was preceded by the never officially released CD-MO in 1988.”
DVD R • “DVD-R is a DVD recordable format. A DVD-R typically has a storage capacity of 4.71 GB (or 4.39 GiB), although the capacity of the original standard developed by Pioneer was 3.95 GB (3.68 GiB). Both values are significantly larger than the storage capacity of its optical predecessor, the 700 MB CD-R - a DVD-R has 6.4 times the capacity of a CD-R.”
DVD RW • “A DVD-RW disc is a rewritable optical disc with equal storage capacity to a DVD-R, typically 4.7 GB. The format was developed by Pioneer in November 1999 and has been approved by the DVD Forum. The smaller Mini DVD-RW holds 1.46 GB, with a diameter of 8 cm.”
Flash Drive • “A flash drive is a very small, portable, solid-state hard drive that can be inserted into a USB port for storage and retrieval of data.”
Floppy Disk • “A floppy disk is a thin, flexible plastic disk coated with magnetic material, on which data and programs can be stored for later retrieval: used mainly with microcomputers.”
Memory Stick • The memory stick is a removable flash memory card format, first launched by Sony in 1998. The first memory stick was available in sizes up to 128MB. Current memory sticks have a maximum size of 32GB.
Microdrive • “A microdrive is a 1-inch hard disk designed to fit in a CompactFlash Type II slot. Although these drives are designed to fit into CompactFlash II slots, they can consume more power than flash memory, causing them not to work in low-power devices. Microdrives can store 8GB or more but must be formatted for a file system that supports its capacity.”
Online Storage • “A file hosting service, online file storage provider, or cyberlockeris an Internet hosting service specifically designed to host user files. Typically they allow HTTP and FTP access. Related services are content-displaying hosting services (i.e. video, image, audio/music), virtual storage, and remote backup.”
PC Card • “A PC card is a small, removable, externally accessible circuit board housing a device, as a modem or disk drive, and conforming to the PCMCIA standard: used especially for laptop computers.”
External Hard Drive • “A hard disk drive (HDD; also hard drive or hard disk) is a non-volatile, random access digital magnetic data storage device. It features rotating rigid platters on a motor-driven spindle within a protective enclosure. Data is magnetically read from and written to the platter by read/write heads that float on a film of air above the platters.”
Smart Cards • “A smart card, chip card, or integrated circuit card (ICC), is any pocket-sized card with embedded integrated circuits. A smart card or microprocessor cards contain volatile memory and microprocessor components. The card is made of plastic, generally polyvinyl chloride, but sometimes acrylonitrile butadiene styrene or polycarbonate. Smart cards may also provide strong security authentication for single sign-on (SSO) within large organizations.”
Smart Media • “SmartMedia is a flash memory card standard owned by Toshiba, with capacities ranging from 2 MB to 128 MB.”
Tape Storage • “Magnetic tape data storage uses digital recording on to magnetic tape to store digital information. As of 2011, tape cartridges can hold up to 5TB of uncompressed data.”
Zip Disk • “The Zip drive is a medium-capacity removable disk storage system that was introduced by Iomega in late 1994. Originally, Zip disks launched with capacities of 100 MB, but later versions increased this to first 250 MB and then 750 MB.”
