Estimation of Energy Savings in Residential Settings by Use of Smart Appliances David Shin Mentor: Professor S. Shivendu Collaborator: Sumit Deo
The Research • Investigate smart appliances and smart meters • Examine the behavior patterns of residents • Survey (1-20 questions) • Understand the processes that manage electrical usage
Purpose • To find out if usage of a smart appliances contributes to solving California’s energy infrastructure problem • Determine the effectiveness of smart meters specifically in raising energy consciousness and diminishing electrical costs
Iso-Energy-Efficient Sphere Any point on the surface will have same energy‐efficiency Behavioral Factors Usage Patterns Energy Consciousness Technical Factors Engineering Design Technical Specifications Managerial Factors Distribution of load Energy Sourcing and Flow The Iso Energy-Efficient Surface
What exactly is a Smart Meter? • Electric meter • Energy consumption • Telemetering • Smart Profile
What are Smart Appliances? • Electricity information • Utility Signals • Emergency situations • Data from U.S. Association of Home Appliance Manufactures (AHAM)
What are Smart Appliances? part 2 • Energy Usage Profile • Power usage at optimal time Data from U.S. Association of Home Appliance Manufactures (AHAM) Courtesy of GE
Conclusions • Conducted residents save energy through: • Fluorescent light bulbs • Proper refrigerator settings • However, two important factors that stifle the energy efficiency in Southern California • Lack of smart appliances (Ex: use of outdated refrigerator model) • Inadequate energy consciousness (Ex: vampire power )
