Description • One of the leading causes of food poisoning, it is travelled by feces of humans and animals. It can be transferred from animals to humans.
How it attacks • Salmonella can be spread by raw, dirty, unclean water and food. • It is transferred by the fecal oral route.
Victims • Usually people from 3rd world countries are affected the most, because of the feces in the water. It affects people with worn immune systems, elderly and young people.
Hide out • It is found in uncooked foods, and in the feces of animals. Inside the body, it is found in the intestinal tract.
Injuries • Diarrhea • Stomach cramps • Fever • Vomiting • Nausea
Dangerous? • Salmonella T. had dangerous effects like • Typhoid fever- constipation, sore throat, headaches, rash on chest, and slowed heartbeat. • Bacteremia- infection travels to bloodstream affecting the spinal cord • Reiter’s symptom- uncommon, but can cause early arthritis, eye irritation and UTI
Number of Victims • There are 14 cases per 100,000 • 30,000 in U.S. yearly
Weapons • Usually clears up without treatment, but re-hydration maybe needed through an IV • If you have a more serious infection it may be treated with ampicillin, gentamicin.
Cell Change • The cells are changed in the intestines to release more water, which causes the diarrhea.
Facts • People with Salmonella T. usually feel the effects for three to seven days, then it usually goes away. • Was named after the discoverer Daniel Elmer Salmon.
