Reflexive and Intensive Pronouns If a pronoun ends in “-self” or “-selves,” it is either reflexive or intensive.
Reflexive Pronouns • A reflexive pronoun refers to the subject and sends the action back to the subject. • Mr. Tribble called himself a strange teacher. • Josh dedicated himself to pitching. REFLECTS REFLECTS
Intensive Pronouns • An intensive pronoun emphasizes a noun or another pronoun in the same sentence. • You yourselveshave eaten pizza before. • Imyself like pizza.
THE BIGGEST RULE • When you take an intensive pronoun out of a sentence, the sentence still makes sense! • Imyself like pizza. • I like pizza. • When you take reflexive pronoun out of a sentence, the sentence DOESN’T make sense! • He picked himself off the ground. • He picked ??? off the ground.
