History • Formed in 1996 at Sobantu township in Msunduzi Municipality • Formedthe following local artists; • Jabulile Dlamini- traditional African costumes and beads • Jabulani Mhlabini- African ceramics and pottery • Mtuseni Ntombela- wheel turner and potter • Bhekise Ngcobo- painting and portraits • Currently registered as a non profit organisation • Jambo at present is Jabu Dlamini in association with Izwi lama Crafters • Izwi lama Crafters is an association of +/-300 crafters within the Midlands region • Jambo works with 50 women from Izwi lama crafters divided into 4 groups
History (continued) • The groups pay an annual fee R100.00 per year towards administration costs • the groups source work from different avenues (including Jambo) for their own benefit

Vision • To promote African culture by marketing the skill of craft in KZN province
Projects from 1994 to 2004 • 1996: training partially blind people from New Horizon School for the blind to make craft products out of waste/ redundant material e.g. isisgubhu, isicholo and ubuhlalu • 1997: training neighbourhood women on the above craft skills • 1999: training youth and school leavers on above craft skills and project management • the marketing outlet was the Tatham Art Gallery- Ngezandla Zethu Exhibition • 2001-2002: prisoners training programme in craft under NICRO • 2002-2003: Department of Labour skills training programme for the unemployed • 2000-2004: comrades marathon (amabeadi-beadi)
Projects from 1996 to 2004 (contd.) • 2000-2003: selling customised products such as: • beaded Christmas tree decorations • beaded name tags for conferences • 2004: beaded and embroided wall hanger on quilt
Where is Jambo going • Reregister Jambo as a commercial entity (Jambo Arts CC) • Jambo Arts CC will market 9 locally and internationally) African arts and craft work • Jambo Arts CC forms a joint venture with Izwi lama crafters to market amabeadi-beadi to other major events such as: • Two oceans • Midmar mile • Dusi marathon • 2010 world cup
Challenges • Marketing and branding Amabeadi-beadi as flagship project for “beading industry” • Protect the intellectual property of Amabeadi-beadi • Administration of Amabeadi-beadi business
Conclusion • My major intention is to bring sustainability into the work of Amabeadi-beadi so that there would be income for the women
