Ultraviolet (UV) light is radiation with a wavelength shorter than that of visible light so you cannot see it UV radiation • UV light is found in sunlight and it can cause chemical reactions, and causes many substances to glow or fluoresce • Most people are aware of the effects of UV through the painful condition of sunburn • The Sun emits ultraviolet radiation but the Earth's atmosphere blocks UV radiation from penetrating through the atmosphere by 98.7% • A positive effect of UV exposure is that it helps the production of vitamin D which is needed to prevent bone diseases • Too much UV radiation leads to direct DNA damage and sunburn and this can lead to skin cancer.
A sun tan is a darkening of the skin in response to exposure to ultraviolet radiation from sunshine (or a sunbed)- the darkening is caused by a pigment known as melanin If you have too much exposure to the sun you will get sunburn and possibly skin cancer. If you are fair skinned this is much more likely to happen Suntans, sunbeds and sunscreens • Like the sun, sunbeds give out harmful UV rays which damage the DNA in our skin cells and can cause skin cancer • Using a sunbed once a month or more, can increase your risk of skin cancer by more than half • The sun and sunbeds also cause premature skin ageing, which means that your skin becomes coarse, leathery and wrinkled at a younger age • Sunscreens can prevent the direct DNA damage which causes sunburn - most products contain an SPF rating to show how well they block the UV rays.

Statement cards To develop a group activity which aims to encourage the pupils to discuss what they know about this topic and what they think the most important messages are. • Use the set of statements which the pupils would have to decide if they are correct or not and then they have to rank the correct ones in order of importance • Get pupils to produce a set of statements themselves, based on their knowledge and what they have learned from the information cards
The holiday visitors book This is a holiday apartment visitors book. The Ferguson family go to the apartment every year.
The holiday visitors book The first page of the book describes the house and the various members of the family including their skin type. It also gives a sun index for different times of year for this location. The house has a sun-bed.
The holiday visitors book Each group of pupils would have the diary and the diary entries would all be different, some would be scene setting and others would be to do with sunbathing tanning etc after each entry, of this type, each group has to give advise to the person writing the entry. So you might have: 5/7/09 - 12/709 Great week of sunshine - wall to wall every day, we were so lucky. Kate managed to have 3hrs in the full sun every day, what a tan she has – she says because she was already tanned before she got here it was ok for her to really go for it.
