What is stress? • Stress is the emotional and physical way in which we respond to pressure.
What cause stress? • Things such as work, family, money, your health, a new born baby, a wedding, or a new house are big contributors to stress.
Stress statistic • Forty-three percent of all adults suffer adverse health effects from stress. • Seventy-five percent to 90% of all doctor's office visits are for stress-related ailments and complaints.
Effects of stress • There are numerous emotional and physical disorders that have been linked to stress including depression, anxiety, heart attacks, stroke, hypertension, immune system disturbances that increase susceptibility to infections, a host of viral linked disorders ranging from the common cold to certain types of cancers, as well as autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis. Stress can have direct effects on the skin such as rashes, hives, atopic dermatitis, the gastrointestinal system (GERD, peptic ulcer, irritable bowel syndrome, ulcerative colitis) and can contribute to insomnia and degenerative neurological disorders like Parkinson's disease.

What not to do about stress Some people use alcohol, tobacco, or drugs to relieve their stress. But instead of relieving their stress, it makes it worse by keeping the body in a stressed state. This can cause even more problems.
Unhealthy way of coping with stress • Smoking • Drinking too much • Overeating or under eating • Zoning out for hours in front of the TV or computer • Withdrawing from friends, family, and activities • Using pills or drugs to relax • Sleeping too much • Procrastinating • Filling up every minute of the day to avoid facing problems • Taking out your stress on others (lashing out, angry outbursts, physical violence)
Healthy ways of coping with stress • Go for a walk. • Spend time in nature. • Call a good friend. • Sweat out tension with a good workout. • Write in your journal. • Take a long bath. • Light scented candles. • Savor a warm cup of coffee or tea. • Play with a pet. • Work in your garden. • Get a massage. • Listen to music. • Watch a comedy
