Creating Community Legacies Ida County Community Betterment Foundation Planting the seeds of giving . . . For the long term benefit of Ida County and its five communities – Arthur, Battle Creek, Galva, Holstein, and Ida Grove.
Creating Community Legacies Ida County Community Betterment Foundation From the beginning, the Ida County Community Betterment Foundation (ICCBF) Advisory Board recognized that “We could do more if we were better known . . . and understood.”
Creating Community Legacies Ida County Community Betterment Foundation • An outreach and marketing plan for three targeted audiences was developed with the goals of: • engaging donors • interacting more effectively with nonprofit organizations • educating professional advisors • A specific communications toolkit was developed for each audience.

Creating Community Legacies Ida County Community Betterment Foundation • Initial steps included: • Preparing a packet of materials about the ICCBF to include a brochure, handouts on Endow Iowa Tax Credit, fund options & ways to give • Developing a PowerPoint presentation • Creating a presence on host foundation’s website • Numerous press releases
General Public Outreach
Creating Community Legacies Ida County Community Betterment Foundation • Efforts to create awareness of the ICCBF with the general public / potential donors included: • a booth at the Ida County Fair with 300 brochures handed out • presentations to 23 civic organizations • direct mailings • A catered “Get Acquainted” event - 53 attendees
Creating Community Legacies Ida County Community Betterment Foundation Notable Outcome: A donor pledged $100,000 to the IBCCF (unrestricted) Endowment Fund
Professional Advisors Outreach
Creating Community Legacies Ida County Community Betterment Foundation • Efforts targeting professional advisors included: • creating a database inclusive of all (35) professional advisors in Ida County • implementing ‘Three Steps for 3 Months’ Advisor Outreach Plan • ~ one-on-one meetings with 10 key advisors • ~ dinner event with speaker (estate planning professional) attended by 24 advisors • ~ direct mailing to all advisors in the County
Creating Community Legacies Ida County Community Betterment Foundation Each step of the Advisor Outreach Plan included customized handouts to educate advisors and for sharing with their clients.
Creating Community Legacies Ida County Community Betterment Foundation Notable Outcomes: IBCCF received a bequest gift of $93,975 to establish an endowed scholarship fund. Aware that IBCCF named in at least 2 other wills.
Nonprofit Organizations Outreach
Creating Community Legacies Ida County Community Betterment Foundation • Efforts to interact more effectively with nonprofit organizations included: • creating a database of 106 nonprofit organizations, units of local government and service organizations • hosting a grant workshop each year for 3 years (direct mailing of invitations) with a total of over 100 attending • meetings with nonprofit boards about establishing an agency endowment fund
Creating Community Legacies Ida County Community Betterment Foundation Notable Outcomes: One agency endowment fund and two special purpose (non-endowed) funds have been established. Received a $100,000 gift for the agency endowment fund. Donor said “Foundation provided a way for people to give back to their community.”
Efforts Other
Creating Community Legacies Ida County Community Betterment Foundation ICCBF contracted to have a countywide needs assessment conducted through CD-Dial with surveys sent to 812 households (random sample). Grantmaking decisions based upon this data will lead to an increase in the quality of life and community vitality in the County.
