Quotation Marks • Used to set off material that represents quoted or spoken language. • Used to indicate speech, titles of shorter works, nicknames and irony. • If you quote dialogue, “write each person’s speech as a separate paragraph” (Harris 79).
Example • Poet William Butler Yeats declared, “Education is not the filling of a pail but the lighting of a fire.” • Need to capitalize the first word of the quotation. • Place quotation marks around the complete quotation. • Place the end punctuation inside the closing quotation marks.
Punctuation • Periods (.) and Commas (,) • Use a comma after expression such as “he said.” • Example: Everyone was relieved when the chairperson said, “I will table this motion until the next meeting.”
Example • Regardless of logic, in the United States periods and commas are located on the inside of the close quotation marks. • This is because when printing used delicate machines, the period and comma were the most delicate and would often break if on the outside of a quotation mark. • Example: Mrs. Alphonse said, “The test scores show improve reading ability.”
Parenthetical Citations • When quoting with parenthetical citations, the period comes after the citation which comes after the closing quotation marks. • Example: • If you quote dialogue, “write each person’s speech as a separate paragraph” (Harris 79).
Other Punctuation • Other punctuation marks such as exclamation marks, question marks etc. can follow logic. • Place a question mark inside the quotation marks if the quotation is a question. Place the question mark outside the quotation if the whole sentence is a question (Harris 84).
Example • “Why can’t I find you?” he asked. • Did Professor Sandifur really say, “No class tomorrow”? • “You can’t fire me!” she shouted.
Single Quotation Marks • ‘ ‘ • Single Quotation Marks are quotation marks within quotation marks. • The same rules apply when using other punctuation marks with single quotation marks. • Example: According to Shannon Dowell, “Good parents always say, ‘Clean up your own mess.’”
