  3. Ideal Job Preferences: IJP First, a little detective work…. • identify characteristics of your IJP • prioritize • focus on skills • list desires • “must haves” • “would prefer” • “dreams” “After you’ve eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, is the truth….”

  4. “Reasonable and appropriate….” • Marketable skills • Capabilities/Tendencies • ( Career Leader test?!) • Needs • Compensation • Location (limiting job search possibilities) • Training (expanding career planning options)

  8. Once you’ve surveyed –you’ve got a “map” with which to guide your research.

  13. NETWORKING is the BEST WAY • People Provide First-Hand Information The Field Companies Opportunities

  14. “People…People who need people….” • People Provide • personal feedback • personal introductions • access to the “hidden job market”

  15. People Perils….. • People may... • Provide opinion rather than facts • Be prejudiced in their views • Not know much about the topic • Have “hidden agendas”

  17. A Strategy of Complements • Networking aids in researching the job market • Information interviews researching the job market aid in networking

  18. Networking requires - • Preparation (knowledge) • Will • Persistence • get appointment • guide discussions • follow up on relationships

  19. Networking is stressful… • Results may not be immediate or tangible • Process can become time-consuming

  21. Obstacles internal… • Procrastination • Perception that effort is undignified So…stay cool, stay focused, stay balanced… emulate the ideal warrior BUT ONLY YOU CALL TELL WHAT HELPS REALIZE YOUR IJP
