Midwestern State University • Mid-size state institution in Ohio • Similar to Bowling Green State University • Looking to develop center of excellence according to the Strategic Plan for Higher Education in the University System of Ohio (USO SP) • Midwestern State recognized as Center for Excellence for RLCs

Collaborative Partners • Chief Academic Business Officer – Jeff • Associate Vice-President for Alumni Affairs – Mindi • Vice President for Student Affairs – Kerry • Goal: To develop a proposal for funding from the President’s incentive fund for a program to improve the quality of the student experience • Proposal: Entrepreneurial Excellence Living & Learning Community • USO SP – “building entrepreneurial excellence”

Residential Learning Communities Defined • Residential Learning Community (RLC) Defined: • A residential educational unit in a college or university • Organized on the basis of an academic theme or approach • Intended to integrate academic learning & community living • May involve collaboration with formal academic departments outside of the RLC • May or may not be degree-granting • Provides formal and/or informal learning opportunities • Includes courses, seminars, tutorials, and/or firesides, credit and non-credit

Entrepreneurial Excellence Living & Learning Community • Residential Learning Community • Collaboration between the College of Business, Student Affairs, and Alumni Development • 30 Business majors in their Junior Year • Students selected based on academic achievement, application, and interview

  6. Community Living • Suite Style living • Board Room for meetings, workshops, classes • Dedicated Computer Lab • Lounge with soft seating

  7. Experiential Learning • Core classes taken together and taught in board room • Faculty salaries included in existing load of business faculty • Faculty member offices located in residence hall • Workshops presented by community business entrepreneurs and alumni • USO SP - “Become more responsive and flexible serving needs of business”

Mentoring and Coaching • Students paired with a mentor • Each student is matched with an alumni personal mentor tailored to the student's primary career interest • Meet at least bi-weekly with their student mentees to coach students and individually mentor students • Once per month have joint session with all mentors/mentees • Coaching • Alumni Advisory Board used for individual coaching • Career Advising • Coordinator of Experiential Programs in hall

Internships • Students will be matched with internships coordinated in by the Coordinator of Experiential Programs or by their mentor • May be supervised by their mentor • Spring semester internship • Bi-weekly meeting with internship coordinator • Monthly meetings of all internship supervisors and students • USO SP – “Increase number of students participating in internships”

Assessment of Outcomes • Increase in applicants for the College of Business • Including Out-of-State Residents (USO SP) • Develop relationships with alumni leading towards increased donations • Increased career placement for graduates who participate in this LLC • USP SP – “voluntary system of accountability” • Improve community business relationships • USO SP – “build relationships with business…to create jobs and economic prosperity”

Conclusion • First project of its kind in Ohio • Innovative use of resources • Collaborative effort involving many constituents both on and off campus • Many connections to Chancellor’s Strategic Plan • Request for support from institution • $1,000 from President’s incentive fund to implement Entrepreneurial Excellence Living & Learning Community
