Is coastal erosion taking place between Botany Bay and Joss Bay?
Where is Botany Bay? Rocky beach at low tide. Wave cut platform Sandy Beach Cliff coastline Urban area On the East Kent coast between Margate and Broadstairs
Evidence 1: Acave Lines of weakness, joints and bedding planes White chalk showing recent erosion High water mark
Evidence 2: An Arch Area most likely to be eroded next Erosion along joints and bedding planes High water mark Wave cut platform Will this arch eventually become a stack?
Evidence 3: A stack Possible original coastline High water mark Erosion to seaward side
Conclusions • Evidence of coastal erosion does exist • There are caves, an arch and a stack • Areas of clean white chalk show continued erosion along lines of weakness in the chalk • In future the arch may disappear and the stack will get smaller • More coastline will disappear. This may cause problems for people who live near the cliff top
Questions for further investigation • Coastal defences may be needed in the area, what form should they take? • What are the advantages and disadvantages of trying to protect the coastline?
