  1. Proton Improvement PlanKeith GollwitzerMay 6th, 2013All Experimenters’ Meeting Thanks to F. Garcia for Linac slides

  2. Overview of Status • RFQ Largely in operations mode – But… • Still adjusting new sources – spark rates and emittances have improved • Second Source – with new hardware design has been tested • Linac Commissioning continues while improving • Efficiency Improving: Up to 90% (current still lower than desired) • Linac Beam Position Monitor system upgrade complete • Progress on developing Linac modulator for replacement/upgrade; both in-house (AD/EE support) and by SLAC • Booster commissioning continues with many studies • Booster RF Solid State Upgrade completed • RF cavity refurbishment goes on • Progress in utilities replacement/upgrade Gollwitzer AEM

  3. Linac Utilities Linac L1 transformer – storage Hatch location • Power Distribution • L1 transformer • Continue with the prep work for the installation of L1 transformer. • Approval from FESS to proceed - DP-18 complete • Electrical conduit relocated to clear the area • Quote on hand for hatch manufactured and installation

  4. Linac Instrumentation Diagnostics Room • Update existing RF Logamp electronics with Digital electronics • FPGA, ADC, Digital Signal Processing • Long term stability • Flexibility to modify system as needed • BPM Electronics Upgrade complete

  5. Linac- 200 MHz Rf Power System -1 Two vernier cells: ripple +/- 37V Spec:+/- 25V (F1-Marx design uses 10 main cells) • Modulator Upgrade • 35kV, Marx-topology modulator to drive triode (or MBK) • SLAC – Two cell test stand

  6. Linac - 200 MHz Rf Power System - 2 Short circuit current 1000A/ Load current100A/ Load voltage & short collector 200V/ Contribution by: H. Pfeffer • Modulator Upgrade (cont.) • 35kV, Marx-topology modulator to drive triode (or MBK) • AD/EE – One cell test stand • Test: Short circuit • The Soft Shut Down circuit is used to softly shut down the IGBT if a fault occur

  7. Last power supply/kicker system for beam notching system has been commissioned Booster Notch Beam Absorber Many Booster studies Aperture scans Lattice Radiation studies Booster Aperture Scan Gollwitzer AEM

  8. New Power Amplifier Booster Solid State Upgrade is complete! Solid State RF Station in Gallery Gollwitzer AEM

  9. Booster RF Work • Solid State Upgrade is complete • Major benefits to reliability and the cost of operation • Refurbishment continues • Un-certified a cavity due to RF leak Booster Cavity Work Refurbished (15Hz) SS Prototype SS Upgraded Cavity Removed Gollwitzer AEM

  10. RF leak from outer flange? We are now concerned about connection with outer flange Pulled one cavity and have started testing Gollwitzer AEM

  11. Cavity Refurbishment There is always something unexpected: goop epoxy fix from some prior leak Gollwitzer AEM

  12. Gollwitzer AEM

  13. Near Term Plans • RFQ injector – Will be adding a new trim package (improve transmission) • Installing Booster Utility Transformer • Installing Linac Roof access • Booster aperture studies • Booster Cogging studies • Booster Lattice Studies • Booster Cavity Refurbishment • Operations: • Higher Intensity Tune-up • Address shielding assessment issues to allow for higher flux Gollwitzer AEM
