The East 1862-1864 Lincoln’s General: Grant- the devil’s arithmetic • Grant (after victories in the West- Shiloh, Vicksburg) given command over the entire Union Army • Union implements a strategy to wear out Robert E. Lee: destroy supplies, attack cities, engage in total war. Wilderness Campaign 1864 • First major meeting between Lee and Grant (stalemate). Battles characterize future encounters. Afterwards, 60,000 Americans will die in battles such as Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor. • Spotsylvania Court House • Cold Harbor Siege of Petersburg • Grant eventually corners Lee at Petersburg (Lee digs trenches). Ambrose Burnside tries to blow up trenches with a tunnel- forgets ladders.
