  2. Reasons to Publish Ahead of Print • Faster time to publish • In some cases, time is critical • Trims composition time • Allows societies to publish articles that otherwise would have to wait to be slotted into a printed issue

  4. Conventional Preprints • Pros: • Fastest turnaround • Mostly automated • Cons: • Potential quality issues • Inconsistent style • Several QC checks are skipped

Suggested Model: Just in Time Publishing Description: in this model, a manuscript goes through a traditional copyediting and typesetting workflow, but it is published online as soon as it is ready for press, regardless of the state of the rest of the issue. • Need to abandon traditional definition of an issue • Think of it solely as a container for already published articles • Issue is ‘complete’ as soon as the designated criteria are met • Examples • American Fisheries Society http://afs.allenpress.com/perlserv/?request=get-toc-upcoming&issn=1548-8659

  6. Just in Time Publishing • Pros: • Quality is assured • Still faster than traditional publishing • Cons: • Slower of the two models • Relinquish control of issue make-up • Since articles are published individually, page numbers are assigned in order of publication

Useful Concepts • Article Versioning • Digital Object Identifier • DOIs provide a perpetual and citable ID that is independent of traditional article metadata. • Analogy: email addresses • Electronic Location Identifier • E-location IDs can be used to identify/order the article within an issue without using the page number convention that has very little meaning online.
