SKATING • Question: Can she skate at the Internationallevel? Can she skate the game? Timing? Support? • Take into consideration: • Quickness and Agility • Speed and acceleration in the neutral zone • Power and strength on skates
Individual Puck Skills • Question: Is she a threat with the puck to score and pass? Can she beat people 1 on 1? • Take into Consideration: • Puck handling – moves, protect, control • Passing – accuracy, variety, reception • Shooting – accuracy, variety, strength & power, touch around net – “SCORER”
Team Puck Sense • Question: Do they use their teammates? • Consider: Vision – sees & uses teammates, creates options, anticipates & supports • Puck control – Uses, supports, teammates to maintain puck control & creates chances. • Risk reward awareness, makes smart & safe plays, few turnovers.
Offensive Team Play • Question: Is she able to play the system in all zones? Does she anticipate, support the play? On the forecheck? Breaking out? On the attack? • Read & react, positioning, timing, without the puck. • Puck control: works to keep control of puck thru intelligent puck possession & movement. • Power play ability, can quarterback, smart point play.
Defensive Team Play • Question: Does she know when to pressure/contain? Can she recognize and play different situations? • Playing the system in all 3 zones, forecheck roles, playing the rush, using the blueline. • DZ awareness, good angling, effective stick check/battle techniques, maintains defensive side.
Defensive Team Play • Off puck awareness, positions supports & swivels head. Takes advantage of transition to carry or move puck. • Defensive Zone transition, puck control, decision under pressure. • Can the defender handle pressure when opposition have the puck?
Physical {Grit} • Question: Will her physical abilities allow her to compete at the International level? • Size and strength • Ability to play when the game is physical • Fitness level (does performance decline over the course of the game?)
Intangibles • Does she COMPETE? Does she play with intensity? Does she have courage? Unquestionable work ethic? • Emotional control: Does not overreact emotionally, not frustrated,performs under pressure. • Does whatever it takes: work ethic, extra effort, determination, blocks shots. • Does all of this within the rules. Plays with class, is respectful.
