Teaching Day 2006 Just AnotherPowerPoint Presentation ! (NOT) Trent Tucker WLU :: SBE ttucker@wlu.ca
Feel free to ask questions at any time! Agenda • The Millennial Learner • The BU415 Past (motivation) • The Anticipation… • The Results ! • The Future (tweaks)
Consider this… The Simpsons started in 1989. Millennial students have never known a time without “culture jamming” The Millennial Learner
What’s Hot • Pop Culture • Television: • “Reality” TV • Rick Mercer • Simpsons and derivatives • Literature: • Douglas Coupland “JPod” • “Oh God. I feel like a refugee from a Douglas Coupland novel.” • The Da Vinci Code
Millennial Learners… • Consumer mentality • Ubiquitous computer access • Impatient with Non-Engaging Pedagogical Techniques • Source: Saundra Y. McGuire, Louisiana State University • Technology and Media savvy • A favourite word: “random” • Mash-ups (e.g. Google Maps)
Millennials… • The Net Gen are more visually literate than previous generations; many express themselves using images. They are able to weave together images, text, and sound in a natural way. Their ability to move beyond the real and the virtual is instantaneous, expanding their literacy well beyond text. Because of the availability of visual media, their text literacy may be less well developed than previous cohorts. • “Educating the Net Generation” EDUCAUSE.
BU415 Management Information Systems • “provides students of management with a basic understanding of management information systems. The primary focus is on the development and administration of information systems and computer applications.” • Required course for fourth year BBA students.
BU415 WLU Teaching Evaluation Results… “This course contributed to my learning” 4.6 4.7 5.4 3.1 3.8 4.2 4.8 S05 I ranked the course @ 3 for 'contributed to learning' because it didn't compared to other courses. The course content is too technical and I feel unnecessary because I won't use it to this extent as a manager. I hire people to know this stuff. S04 F03
BU415 • Random Comments • “It really is specific + techie, but I'm sure it could be worse.” • “Not many managers will actually make a website, but learning to extract data is useful.” • “Anything "different" is effective, breaks routine.”
“Hard to be motivated to do a 3% presentation” + + “No other fourth year courses have three presentations” – – Anecdotal: creative presentations get better grades regardless of content quality BU415 Components Mix
Original Idea “I also thought of replacing one of the presentations with a "commercial". The students have a theme for their research paper and then create a 60-second advertisement / public service announcement based on their research. All the groups can present their commercial in one class and we can have a panel of judges from industry / communications”
The Anticipation… • Spring Term “Feedback” Survey… • “Also new this term, instead of formal presentations for the research reports, was the ‘Ad Campaign’ component (15%). Although we have yet to see the results, any comments or thoughts on this approach?”
The Anticipation… (good) • Formal presentations make the class fall asleep, so this is probably better. • I think the Ad Campaign will be fun as opposed to stuffy presentation, although I don't know all the topics lend themselves to an ad. • I think its a great approach in comparison to the standard formal presentation styles. It allows the groups to be a bit more creative. • This its a great way for creative students to participate. • I think it looks interesting, making a video should be fun. • I enjoy video editing so I'm for it
The Anticipation… (not so good) • I would prefer to present our report rather than an ad campaign. Developing presentation skills is key. • I disagree with this ad campaign - I think it is a waste of time, we don't learn from it. Also it is ridiculous that it is worth as much as the research report! • Formal presentation would be better. Ad Campaign not a good idea - does not fully present all the gathered facts. Presentation informs the audience, Ad Campaign sells to the audience and I don't feel our topic is "selling" material. • I don't like that its related to the research topic; the ad could be more creative otherwise. • I don't like the idea - too much focus on fluffy creatives rather than learning.
