  1. Argonne National Laboratory ATLAS Accelerator Tune Archiving System Presented by Deborah Quock

  2. ATLASArgonne Tandem Linac Accelerator System • Began operations in early 1960’s • Low-energy, heavy-ion accelerator of elements from hydrogen to uranium • Contains 64 individually controlled superconducting resonators • Automated tune archiving system

  3. ATLAS Control System • Vista’s Vsystem Real-Time Database Control Software. • CAMAC Serial Highway • Oracle Rdb Relational Database Software • Paradox Relational Database Software

  4. Control System Components Alpha Server Control Room PC Database Management AlphaStations Control Room Operator Consoles CAMAC Serial Highway PCs Remote Control and Monitoring Remote Ion Source Operator Consoles

  5. Tune Archiving Purpose • Store operating parameters on a 4-hour schedule • Track performance of ongoing experiment • Backup system for restoring accelerator configuration values • Configure accelerator components for a new experiment

  7. ATLAS Logbooks Application • Paradox data archiving system in use since 1994 • Stand-alone, runtime PC application • Forms display current accelerator experiment or an archived experiment

  8. ATLAS Logbooks Application Displayed information includes: • Experiment number, date and time, beam charge states, energies, atomic mass, and atomic number • Ion Source device values • Magnet, solenoid, steerer, and quadrupole currents • Resonator amplitudes and phases • Slit positions • Cryogenics information • ...and more

  9. ATLAS Logbooks Home Page

  10. Typical Beamline User Interface

  11. ATLAS Logbooks Tools • Archive accelerator configuration data • Search archived records and change experiment • Scale and load a complete tune according to charge states, energies and mass requirements • Perform an Endtune (archived experiments run at the maximum possible resonator energy gain) • …and more

  12. Load a Complete Tune Form

  13. Future Plans • Short-term project: • Upgrade ATLAS Logbooks to Paradox version 9 • Indefinite, long-term project: • Convert ATLAS Logbooks to an Internet browser-based user interface • Change the database platform to a client/server relational database management system

  14. Conclusion • Tune archiving system is used extensively • Reduces experiment start-up times by more than 50% Questions or Comments
