1804-1806The Lewis and Clark Expedition By: Luke Schwerer
The Louisiana Purchase • The French occupied Louisiana, which blocked the United States from westward expansion. • President Jefferson bought this land from the French in 1803. • The land stretched from west of the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains, and doubled the size of America.
Meriwether Lewis and William Clark • President Jefferson chose Meriwether Lewis to lead the expedition. • He described Lewis as “brave, prudent, habituated to the woods, and familiar with Indian manners and character.” • Lewis was a former army captain, and was Jefferson’s presidential assistant. • Lewis chose Lieutenant William Clark to co-lead the trip.
The Journey Begins • In May 1804, Lewis and Clark began their expedition. • They set out in St. Louis, in what is now Missouri. • President Jefferson asked them to study the geography, plants, minerals, animals, and climate of the land they were to explore. He also told them to look for a waterway in this territory. • To fulfill the request of the president, Lewis had to study surveying and note taking skills so he could record what he saw. • Both Lewis and Clark kept journals on what they would see on their expedition.
The Plains • Lewis told the leaders of the Indian tribes they encountered that the United States owned the land, and he would give out presents to make peace with them. • Sacagawea, the wife of a French fur trader, left her Mandan camp to assist Lewis and Clark across the Great Plains. • Lewis wrote in his journal, “I had a most delightful view of the country…” • Lewis also wrote about the dangers of the expedition, like sickness and conflicts with the Indians. The Great Plains
The Rockies • They met the leader of a Shoshoni tribe when they got to the Rocky Mountains. • He was Sacagawea’s brother, and providedthe expedition with horses and a guide to assist them in crossing the mountains. • Lewis wrote that “We suffered everything Cold, Hunger, and Fatigue could impart.” • They followed the Colombia River to where it emptied into the Pacific Ocean. Here they spent the winter, exploring and trading with the Clatsop and Chinook Indians.
The Results of the Expedition • Although they did not find a waterway, Lewis and Clark found useful information on the western lands, including paths across the Rocky Mountains. They also took notes on plants and animals they encountered. • They made peace with many Indian tribes, providing trading sources and eliminatingany prejudices. • Lewis later became the governor of the new Louisiana Territory. • Clark later became the governor of the Missouri Territory.
