Welcome toAlgaeBook • In order to access this site you must: • Belong to Kingdom Protista • Be an algae-like Protist…duh • Be an autotroph(unless you’re “special”) • Contain chlorophyll and carryout Photosynthesis • Belong to 1 of 3 phyla • Euglenophytes • Diatoms • Dinoflagellates
AlgaeBook • Congratulations! You have met all of the classifications needed to view this site! • You may now search for protists you may know!
AlgaeBook EUGLENOPHYTES • Live in Water • 1,2 or 3 flagella @ apical end for movement • Use chloroplasts for photosynthesis • Can turn into heterotrophes if left in dark. • Has an eyespot to see in dark. • Have pellicles rather than cellulose. • Do yourself… ya know, asexual reproduction!!
Bio: Hey guys, I’m Eric Eulgena. I pretty much live in the water, I love to swim and move around using my flagellum ( which is HUGE btw). I don’t like to be limited, so I could be classified as a plant or an animal. I can see in the dark, too... How many other protists can do that? I live organically, making my own food, but I can become a carnivore, so don’t get on my bad side. I like it hot… well, I reproduce better when I’m well fed and its nice and warm. That’s pretty much it for me. Eric Euglena http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J3sgoy22Ij4
AlgaeBook DINOFLAGELLATES • Live in water • Have 2 flagella- one posterior, second is transverse • Can be bioluminescent • Others can produce toxins that concentrate in filter feeding shellfish • Which can cause illness to humans when ingested
Dude, I spend all my time at the beach chillin in the ocean. My favorite band is the Red-Tides, and when my friends and I go to their shows, we make the waves glow-kinda trippy. I’m pro. Photo, but I occasionally eat other plankton. My family can be disturbed if the temperature or salinity of the water is out of balance. Being the Sea’s primary producers, we’re allowed to be picky. AlgaeBook DIATOMS • Have tests (shells) that are made up of silica (SiO2) • SUPER AMAZING!
I am a unicellular lady who does a lot of work! I produce 40% of the photosynthesis that occurs in the ocean and freshwater. I love to be extravagant, especially when it comes to looks. I enclose myself in a clear “box” , called a test that is made of silica. My people are often eaten by larger organisms- Diatoms are known for being a giving people… even when it hurts! My “brother” of sorts is Percy Phytoplankton. We’re very similar in nature. I’m just as picky as he is! Diana Diatom http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JYB5529hDPI
