Urinary System • Lab manual reference: Exercise 40 (pp. 609 – 626) • Figure 40.3 pg. 613 (frontal section of kidney)
PART A: ANATOMY OF THE HUMAN URINARY SYSTEM • INSTRUCTIONS: • 1. Using the human torsos as well as the kidney and nephron models, locate as many as possible of the following structures from the list, "Major Structures of the Human Urinary System". Use your textbook for reference. • 2. Answer related questions on the Questions Sheet.

PART B: ANATOMY OF THE CAT URINARY SYSTEM INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Obtain your assigned cat and locate each of the structures from the list, "Major Structures of the Cat Urinary System." Use your lab manual (Color Photo Gallery) and the Rust lab manual for reference. See Figure 1 (attached) for reference regarding the cat kidney. 2. Answer related questions on the Questions Sheet.

PART C: ANATOMY OF THE PIG KIDNEY INTRODUCTION: The pig kidney is studied because it is more similar in Structure to the human kidney than the cat kidney. INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Obtain a pig kidney and wash it well. 2. Observe the shape, color, and texture of the kidney. Note the slit on the medial surface (hilum) through which structures enter the kidney. (The capsule has most probably been previously removed.)
PART C: ANATOMY OF THE PIG KIDNEY 3. Locate the ureter, renal artery, and renal vein. Distinguish between these 3 structures in the following manner: a. First, locate the renal vein. It is the largest of the 3 and has the thinnest walls. b. Second, locate the renal artery and ureter ‑ these are both small and thick walled. To distinguish between them, slice each longitudinally and look at the inner walls. The ureter has characteristic folds which the artery lacks. 4. Make a coronal section through the kidney, but don't separate the halves completely. Open the organ and lay it on the dissecting pan. 5. Identify the rest of the structures from the list, "Major Structures of the Pig Kidney," using your lab manual for reference. 6. Compare the internal structure of the cat and pig kidneys, noting differences.
