11th Amendment • Limits suits against states • People in different states or different countries can’t sue a state in federal court • A state government can only be sued by its own courts
12th Amendment • Electing President and Vice President • should there be no majority vote for one person, the House of Representatives (one vote per state) chooses the president and the Senate the vice president.
13th Amendment • Abolished Slavery • Except as a punishment for a crime Reconstruction Amendment
14th Amendment • Defines citizenship • Anyone born or naturalized in the US (regardless of race, religion, etc) is a citizen and has rights • No state can deny citizenship Reconstruction Amendment

Reconstruction Amendments • Reconstructing America after the war • Establish equality for African Americans
16th Amendment • Allows the government to collect an income tax from all Americans. • Income tax allows for the federal government to keep an army, build roads and bridges, enforce laws and carry out other important duties.
17th Amendment • People directly vote for Senators • The Senate of the US will be composed of two senators
18th Amendment • Prohibits the manufacture, sale, or transportation of alcohol • Only amendment to be repealed • Prohibition • Passed in 1917-Repealed in 1933

20th Amendment • Term Limits • Sets the dates at which federal government elected offices end. • Term ends/begins at noon on January 20th for President and Vice President

22nd Amendment • President may only serve 2 terms • Can serve 10 years if served as President from being a VP
23rd Amendment • Gives residents of Washington DC the right to vote for representatives in the Electoral College. Since DC is not a state, its residents were not allowed to vote for President as well as elected voting representative to Congress.
24th Amendment • Can not keep citizens from voting by using taxes (poll tax) • Used to have to pay a tax to vote but not anymore
25th Amendment • If President dies or leaves office the Vice President becomes President • The new President (old VP) nominates the new Vice President…then it goets voted on by the houses of congress.

27th Amendment • When Congress votes to increase salaries, it will start at the beginning of the next term • Congress can’t give itself a pay raise, it goes to the next Congress
