Why is integrating technology important? • With the invention of the internet, Google, Wikipedia, YouTube, and smart phones we have significantly changed the way we share and gather information. • We now have access to millions of experts (and non-experts) right at our finger tips in the matter of seconds. • Technology is advancing exponentially and we need to keep up. • Problem? We don’t know what the workforce will look like when they graduate. (except that there will be computers and jet packs)
What will we need to teach? • Critical Thinking • Creative Thinking • Flexible Thinking • Innovation • Information Processing • Draw Conclusions • Inquiry Skills • Information Application • Technology • Work Cooperatively
SAMR • Substitution – using a document camera instead of an overhead projector • Augmentation – take pictures of geometric shapes around the classroom and present them using the app Educreations • Modification – Skype with an expert • Redefinition – a lesson on coding
How do we know if we are authentically integrating technology? Ask yourself • Where does this sit on the SAMR model? • How does this help my students? • Am I teaching students to think creatively, critically, or flexibly? • What is the purpose of this technology? • Is there a better way? More efficient? • Is this worth it? • How will this prepare my students for the 21st century workforce?
Common Problems • No time to encourage student driven questioning and curiosity • Difficult to find high interest, rich text for elementary students (short passages) • Lack of time to prepare inquiry lessons • Students lack communication and listening skills • Lack of online research resources appropriate for elementary readers • Dull student writing • Boring homework • New Common Core standards to incorporate • Keeping up with parent emails and communicating classroom activities • Make technology use meaningful • Students unmotivated to learn outside of school
