Pre-teaching Vocabulary For each word below, write it and a synonym (a word that means the same thing) on your paper (+5) • refuse – anything thrown away as useless • surpassed – went beyond; did excellently • emanating – coming forth • relish – pleasure and enjoyment • stifle – hold back Elk Dogs are horses. Kingfishers are birds. White buffalo are rare signs of fortune. A travois is like a cart without wheels.

  8. Post-Reading Analysis Prompt Orpheus was the son of Apollo and Calliope. He married Eurydice who soon died. He followed her into Hades and begged Pluto to have her back. He said Orpheus could have her back if he left Hades trusting that she was right behind him. If he turned around to check that she was, Eurydice would spend eternity in Hades, and Orpheus couldn’t have her back. Of course, Orpheus turned around to check on Eurydice so she died again, and he lived unhappily ever after. Comparative Literature- What are the similarities between “Orphan Boy and the Elk Dog” and “Orpheus & Eurydice,” the Greek legend? Write your analysis in at least ten sentences and include text-based details. (+10)
