  1. The following 4 slides show the effect of high key lighting on the face of the character and blacking out the background in the first 3!

  2. 2 motifs shown…. Television and clocks

  3. Repeated effect. Different characters in the same pose. Forms a motif of sorts as it reminds us of previous scenes and similarities in the characters’ situations.

  4. Backlighting. Highlights the silhouette of the character against a strong light. Effect is mystery and often fear.

  5. Mirror and reflection motif. To make us think about similar situations, relate them to each other and compare them. Also t enable us to see two characters at the same time and/or reactions.

  6. Two shots. Show relationships, points of view and reactions

  7. Rose motif.Repeated throughout the film.(Scarlet Carsons – a pun on the Coronation Street actress Violet Carson)

  8. Settings.How does the director explain, without using dialogue, exactly where the scene is being set?
