There's three major parts of the fossil fuel .. there's coal , oil, and natural gas. These were formed before the dinosaurs, the age they were formed was called the Carboniferous Period. These period occur about 360 to 286 years ago. Fossil fuels
Evaluating Fossil Fuels Pro Con • Renewable: Ethanol is a renewable fuel that comes from agricultural crops. It takes only six months to grow and harvest a crop such as corn which can be converted to ethanol • Domestic: Crops such as corn and sugar cane can be grown and produced into ethanol in the United States. • Land use: Ethanol requires significant use of land resources to grow enough crops for production. Many experts express concern this could take away from food supply. • Energy level: Ethanol contains less energy than gasoline. A car won't go as far on a gallon of ethanol as it would on a gallon of conventional gasoline. The actual miles per gallon performance may vary depending on the vehicle.
NON-RENEWABLE • A nonrenewable resource is a natural resource that is present in limited supplies and depleted by use. • A limited resource that we are extracting from the ground faster than it can replenish itself. • Examples of nonrenewable resources are copper, gold, silver, zinc, aluminum, coal, oil and natural gas.
RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCES • Solar Energy • Hydroelectric Energy • Wind Energy • Biomass Energy
Solar Energy Pro • The production of energy from the use of fossil and some renewable fuels (e.g. wind turbines) can be noisy, yet solar energy produces electricity very quietly • Solar energy can be very efficient in a large area of the globe, and new technologies allow for a more efficient energy production on overcast/dull days • Solar panels can be installed on top of many rooftops, which eliminates the problem of finding the required space for solar panel placement. Con • The major con of solar energy is the initial cost of solar cells. Currently, prices of highly efficient solar cells can be above $1000, and some households may need more than one. This makes the initial installation of solar panels very costly. • The weather can affect the efficiency of solar cells
Hydroelectric Energy Pro • Hydroelectric power is completely independent of fossil fuels or other perishable resources. It does not involve any combustion or burning of fuel, coal, etc. and therefore, does not release any toxic chemicals in the atmosphere and nor does it create any harmful byproducts. • The operational cost is quite low and it is also a clean way of producing energy. Also, the water can be reused for agriculture, irrigation, civic water supply, etc., therefore losses are minimal Con • One of the major cons of hydroelectricity is the need for a large enough reservoir. Constructing a large reservoir is a major challenge, both in terms of time and money. Also, it often involves relocation of families who happen to be residing in the area that has been approved for the construction of the reservoir • Droughts can have a severely adverse impact on hydroelectric power generation.
Wind Energy Pro • The biggest benefit one can reap out of wind energy is that it generates electricity, but does not release any harmful pollutants or gases as by products. This therefore makes it a safer and cleaner source of energy. • Farmers can not only use the electricity for themselves, but can also earn income out of it, by providing electricity to several homes. • Another good thing about wind energy is that it does not interfere with the working of other sources of energy. You can use solar panels and other sources of energy production simultaneously Con • Wind turbines can get damaged or completely destroyed when hit by a heavy storm or a severe lightning. • In recent times, some people have claimed that wind turbines lower the aesthetic beauty of the land! However, I think that, it is a matter of individual perception and not everyone looks at things in the same way
Biomass Energy • There is plethora of organic waste and agricultural waste generated everyday. Biomass is produced from these wastes, which makes biomass an easily available resource. • Biomass briquettes are the substances which produce electricity. The electricity generated by the briquettes is much cleaner than that obtained from fossil fuels. • The process of extraction of biomass is very expensive. This is the reason in many places the projects of biomass energy extraction are never completed • Although, biomass can produce 10 times more energy than the sun or wind, it is also known to release the highest levels of gases that contribute to global warming.
