  4. Mexican Constitution of 1824 • Augustinde Iturbide • Created constitution similar to U.S. Articles of Confederation • Federative republic – state governments had power • Mexican Nationalists feared U.S. would annex Texas – pushed for central government

  5. Fredonian Rebellion • Haden Edwards - Empresario – Nacogdoches • Edwards led newcomers in declaring East Texas the independent Republic of Fredonia • Perished before a battle could even be fought • Mexico suspects U.S. behind revolt

  6. John Quincy Adams • Election in 1828 • Sent Joel R. Poinsett to offer to purchase Texas • Mexico offended – kicked him out

  7. Mier y Teran Report • José Manuel Rafael Simeón de Mier y Terán • Reported that Anglo-Americans outnumbered Mexicans in Texas 10 to 1 • Recommended • closure to further immigration from the U.S. • Increased immigration from Mexico • Tighter trade controls

  8. Law of April 6, 1830 • Mexican Congress passed law to address crisis in Texas • Law – • closed immigration from the U.S. • gave legislative authority to ending slavery • Encouraged immigration from other nations • Placed agents in Texas – report on conditions • Customs collections enforced
