  3. Battle of the alamo • Effects: • Caused outcry “Remember the Alamo” and encouraged revolt • Causes: • Texans did not want to give up the Alamo to Santa Anna

  4. Texas declaration of independence • Effects: • Texans were fighting to be independent of Mexico • Causes: • Texans felt like the Mexican government did not respect the rights of the colonists

  5. Runaway scrape • Effects: • Families fled east to the United States and left their homes and belongings behind • Causes: • Many Texans were scared by Santa Anna after the Battle of Alamo

  6. Battle of san jacinto • Effects: • The battle was the shortest in history (18 minutes) and Mexico surrendered • Causes: • This was Sam Houston’s last chance to beat the Mexicans

Causes and effects of the revolution • Effects: • Texas independence • Texas became a republic • Eventually, Texas joined the US • Causes: • Santa Ana abolished the Constitution of 1824 • 1830 prohibition of further settlers from the US • Mexican government recinded property tax law (settlers were exempt for 10 years) • Requirement to become a Catholic and pay taxes to the church • Slavery illegal • Economic issues –cotton vs. cattle and grain
