The beginning • How did Muhammad's life begin? • He was born in 570 C.E. • His mother sent Muhammad to to be raised by a nomad family in the desert • What is a nomad? • A person who moves from place to place, often in search of food and water • Quick write • How might being an orphan affect a persons perspective on life?

  7. The Arab religion • The Arab religion was polytheistic • The holiest site was the Kab’ba which was in the city of Mecca • A place for peace not war • Why was Mecca a great place for trade?

The beginning • How did Muhammad's life begin? • He was born in 570 C.E. • His mother sent Muhammad to to be raised by a nomad family in the desert • What is a nomad? • A person who moves from place to place, often in search of food and water • When Muhammad was still a young man he began managing caravans (trade routes) for a women named khadijah, who ran a trading business

  9. The career begins • How did Muhammad solve the fight between tribal leaders in regards to the Ka’ba? • Around 610 C.E. Muhammad went to a cave in the mountains to pray. • He was visited, according to Islam, by the angel Gabriel who told him to recite • “You are the messenger of God” • Muhammad’s career as a prophet began • Quick write • Why might have Muhammad been afraid when he first received this message?

Who is coming with me? • Muhammad preaches that God wants humans to treat each other with compassion, honesty, and justice • Why might this message be accepted among the poor? • His first followers are called Muslims • Muslims= those who surrender to God • His followers wrote down his words and collected them in the Qur’an (Koran), the holy book of Islam • Written in Arabic • Many Muslims believe Muhammad could not read nor write • how might this be proof that Muhammad was a true prophet?

The opposition • Quick write • Why would some people be skeptical of Muhammad and his message? • What class (rich or poor) of people might oppose him? • Most people rejected Muhammad’s teachings • The rich leaders did not want to share their wealth • The feared that Muhammad would take political power • Did not want to give up their gods • Anyone who harmed Muhammad would face Abu Talib’s wrath

From Migration to the end • He does not reject other religions • God has many times given his message to Man. • Moses, Jesus • In 622, Muhammad and his followers left Mecca to the city of Medina • Muslims call this journey hijrah • A few years later, Muhammad and his followers march on the city of Mecca and take the city by force

  13. Revenge? • Muhammad and his followers destroyed the idols (statues of Gods) at the Ka’ba and rededicated the shrine to Allah (God) • Why would Muhammad want to destroy the Ka’ba? • Muhammad also forgave his former enemies. The war had ended

The death; but not the end • United under the flag of Islam, the religion and its people spread across the globe • When Muhammad died, most of central and southern Arabia was under Muslim Control • Who should carry on after his death? • Abu Bakr became the first caliph (Muslim ruler) • Under his leadership, Muslims completed the unification of Ariabia
