  2. Background • Before 2000, structured education for adults with type 1 diabetes was almost non-existent in the UK • DAFNE trial of German course in 3 centres (1 week programme) • Bournemouth adapted similar programme delivered 1 day each week for 4 weeks

  3. Basic Principles • Insulin treatment should fit around lifestyle and not vice versa • Patients can eat what they like, when they like • They need to know how to vary insulin dose according to carbohydrate intake, exercise and other factors

Type 1 Education Network -objectives • To support centres in delivering high quality self-management education for Type 1 diabetes • To support centres in accessing appropriate staff training • To enable centres to share best practice and learn from each other • To develop common evaluation criteria to facilitate quality assurance

  6. First meeting: May 2003: Presentations from • Guernsey • DAFNE • Oxford (Insight) • Portsmouth (Jigsaw) • Torquay (TIFA) • Bournemouth (BERTIE) • York (BITES)

  7. Since……. • Twice yearly meetings (Oxford, Leicester, London, Newcastle, Peterborough) • Regional meetings November 2006 • Northern Ireland network May 2007 • Membership • 360 on email list • 204 ‘signed up’ members • 50+ centres providing structured education

  9. DH / NICE Criteria 2005 Structured education programmes must • Have a written curriculum • Have trained educators • Be quality assured (including peer review) • Be audited

  10. Mission Statement “To support teams in integrating structured education for children and adults with diabetes into their service, by providing a framework for curriculum development, educator training, quality assurance and audit which meets the Department of Health criteria”

  12. 1st Annual Conference • An opportunity for centres across the UK to showcase their diabetes education programmes • Type 1 and type 2 diabetes • workshops and poster presentations
