  1. Monday, Sept 29, 2008 • EQ: What Forces Affect the Earth? • Journal: What evidence do we have the Pangea once existed? • Agenda • Return Quizes/Discuss • Plate Tectonics Intro • Plate Tectonics guided reading/notes • Simon Says Review

  2. Continental drift

  3. Alfred Wegner suggested that a supercontinent he called Pangaea had existed in the past, broke up starting 200 million years ago, and that the pieces ``drifted'' to their present positions

  4. Wegners supporting evidence the fit of the continents the distribution of fossils a similar sequence of rocks at numerous locations ancient climates the apparent wandering of the Earth's polar regions

  5. What is the Lithosphere? The crust and part of the upper mantle = lithosphere Less dense than the material below it so it “floats”

  6. What is the Asthenosphere? The plastic layer below the lithosphere = asthenosphere The plates of the lithosphere float on the asthenosphere

  7. Platetectonics The theory states that Earth's outermost layer, the lithosphere, is broken into 7 large, rigid pieces called plates.

  8. 2 Types of Plates Ocean plates - plates below the oceans Continental plates - plates below the continents

  9. Divergent Boundaries Boundary between two plates that are moving apart or rifting  

  10. Convergent Boundaries Boundaries between two plates that are colliding  

  11. Tuesday, Sept 30, 2008 • EQ: What Forces Affect the Earth • Journal: Name two types of plate boundaries and draw arrows representing how they move. • Test on Friday-Plate Tectonics and Earth’s Structure

  12. Tuesday, Sept 30, 2008 • EQ: What Forces Affect the Earth • Homework-Finish Notes Worksheet (both sides) • Agenda • Discuss Journal Entry • Convection Current Model • Sea Floor Spreading • Finish Notes Worksheet • TOTD-How do convection currents relate to plate tectonics

  13. Tuesday, Sept 30, 2008 • EQ: What Forces Affect the Earth Convection Currents • Go to one of each convection stations and draw what you see. • Describe what is happening • Where do you see “rising” and “sinking”?

  14. WednesdayOctober 1, 2008 • EQ: What Forces Affect the Earth? • Journal-Explain the theory of Seafloor Spreading? • Test on Friday

  15. WednesdayOctober 1, 2008 • EQ: What Forces Affect the Earth? • Agenda • Discuss Journal Entry • Plate Boundaries Activity • Fault Notes and Demo • Go Over Homework from Yesterday • Study Guide
