Why • The energy upgrade of the PS Booster main bending magnet requires endurance tests at high current (≈12 kA) and high ramp rates • High currents and high ramp rates require powerful converters • The cluster A of the SM18 test benches is actually equipped with a 14kA/61V capacity power converter that fulfills the requirements
How • The magnet will be installed in-between the A1 and A2 benches, close to the platform (action: TE/MSC-TF) • The main water-cooled current leads will be disconnected from A1 CFB leads (action: TE/MSC-TF)
How (2) • Extra cables will be used to connect those leads to the magnet lying beneath (action: TE/MSC-MNC) • Cooling water for the magnet will be drawn from the main water supply distribution of the test facility and connected to a pressure booster in order to reached the required ΔP (action: CERN water support team under request of TE/MSC-MNC) IN OUT
Powering • RM.A converter will be switched to 18kV mode, in order to get the required 61V/14kA capacity (action: CERN electrical support under request of TE/EPC-MPC) • The usual interlocks from test benches will be removed from the converter (action: TE/EPC-MPC) • The only left interlocks will be the magnet water flow and the coils temperature, connected in series and brought directly to the converter (action: TE/MSC-MNC) • The regulation loop parameters will be adapted to the magnet and cables impedance (action: TE/EPC-MPC)
Current cycles control • The usual power application, running on Sunmta32, will be used through the gateway (action: TE/MSC-TF) • Possibility of creating any required current cycle within the limits of the PC range (action: TE/MSC-TF following TE/MSC-MNC specifications ) • Usual cold benches interlocks will be shorted in order to use the software (action: TE/MSC-TF)
