This report provides an analysis of the activities of information and communication technology related fora, including a special focus on home networks. It covers new fora, changes in forum names, and forum activities by objective field, purpose, and number of members. Technology Research Advisory Group 1. Name: Technology Research Advisory Group (TAG) 2. Objectives: • To advise TTC for its activities directions and work efficiency by conducting studies and analyses of the world movement in the information and communication standardization, which leads to the improvement of TTC’s attractiveness as well as member fee effectiveness. (2) To make the survey report available on the TTC web site for free and effective utilization by the industry and improve presence of TTC in general.

Profile (2) • Survey reports has been quoted by many people and organizations such as the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, the Japan Fair Trade Commission and private research institutes • University professors widely referred in their academic books and reports • De facto standardization part was contributed in TTC’s 20th Anniversary Memorial Publication (March, 2006)

Outline of 12th version of Fora Survey Report(Analyses and Results) 1. New fora, fora with their names changed and deleted fora in FY 2004 • 94 fora were surveyed • 4 fora have been newly surveyed; 4 fora have changed their names; 9 fora have stopped their activities 2. Analyses from viewpoints of objective field, purpose of activities and number of members • To investigate change of market needs analyzing number of fora by objective fields • To investigate change of market needs analyzing purpose of activities • Number of forum members is a barometer of forum activities. Changes of each forum vitality and market needs can be found.

Topics – Home Networks Related ForaAnalysis on standardization of home networks • As a topic for this year we extended forum surveillance to home network area. About 50 fora were picked up and surveillance and analysis were given. • Results of Analyses • Similar tendencies were found between home NW fora and ordinary fora in the analyses of objective field, purpose of activities and number of members • Every time at drastic change of internet access methods the number of forum members increased remarkably • New comers such as electric power, broadcasting, AV apparatus and house equipment venders • Relationship with home network related SDOs • Obstacles in standardization in CEs and infrastructures in houses seems to have being removed from lower layers through recent steady standardization activities.

Conclusion Standardization activities will be implemented considering following items directly or indirectly; • Diversification of standardization players • Existence of key players • Consideration for end consumers; i.e. accessibility, easy version-up, safety and security • Consideration for joining of new players; review of Rules of Procedure, IPR policy, etc. • Globalization of activities; utilization of ICT technologies
Expectations for collaboration in fora surveillance • Following up the discussions in GSC 10, TTC proposed a collaboration framework in fora surveillance among CCSA, TTA & TTC in April, 2006 and it was agreed. • TTC will propose and prepare; • Implementation schedule • Practical procedures for collaboration • Template for individual forum surveillance • Comprehensive explanation on analyzing method TTC has used and improved for ten years • First report of the collaboration will be provided in GSC 12
