But First… What is telecommunication Technology? • Telecommunication is the transmission of messages over a country or all over the world, Telecommunication technology is the devices that allow you to do that. Telecommunication technology Facts: • 1951 - First long distance phone call without directory assistance. • 1968 - First 911 system was introduced in the United States. • 1971 – First answering machine. • Alexander Graham Bell originally wanted the greeting for the telephone to be "Ahoy" but Thomas Edison voted for "Hello,” • The original name of the telephone was the harmonic telegraph. • It took a year to connect the first line from New York to San Francisco. 14,000 miles of copper wire and 130,000 telephone poles were needed. • Globally, about $1 trillion is spent yearly on telecommunications products and services. • The telephone is the most used piece of communication equipment in the world. • The telephone is the most profitable invention in US history. 3. Telephones Then… The first telephone operators only answered the phone when they felt like it. The operator would pick up the phone and say, “Number please.”  If the number wasn't busy, the operator took a chord and plugged it into a switchboard That connected the caller to the number. The telephone became one of the most popular devices of communication. People wrote fewer letters and visited less often. The pushbutton telephone was invented in 1941. 1877 The first telephone didn’t have a ring, so the caller had to tap the phone with a hammer to let the receiver know a call was being sent to them. 1941 Early telephones couldn’t do much more than connect a caller to an operator or another person. Alexander Graham Bell didn’t just create the phone, he also invented the microphone and the speaker to go along with it. The Bell Telephone Company was founded by Alexander Graham Bell in 1877 to build a nationwide telephone system. 2000

4. Computers then… The word "computer" was first recorded as being used in 1613 and was originally was used to describe a person who performed calculations. The definition of a computer stayed the same until the end of the 19th century when it began referring to a machine that performed calculations. The computer has been through many changes to become the machine that we use today.  The idea for the computer began with people who wanted an easier way to calculate numbers. people have been using computers in their daily lives since the beginning of civilization. Before the computer they would use simple adding devices like the abacus to work out equations.

5. The facsimile (Fax machine) Then… faxing is transmitting a message over a telephone line, and receiving a hard copy of the text, drawings, or photographs. The technology for fax machines was invented a long time ago, however, fax machines did not become popular until the 1980’s. The first fax machine was invented by Alexander Bain. Several years earlier, Samuel Morse had invented the first successful telegraph machine and the fax machine closely evolved from the technology of the telegraph. The earlier telegraph machine sent morse code that was decoded into a text message.

6. Telephones Now… Cellphones Modern cell phones are capable of much more than just sending and receiving phone calls. Mobile phones used today allow users to send and receive text messages, emails, photos, videos assess the Internet, play games, listen to music and more. Although they started off as quite bulky devices they are now very sleek, small and portable, comfortably fitting in a users pocket. • Telephones • So many new features invented in the telephone, These features are handy and capable of making a lot of tasks easy and quick: • Caller ID helps to identify the person who has made the call. • Call waiting helps you to put the current call on hold and receive another one. • The answer phone to answer the call with a recorded message from the owner so the owner could call the person who called back if they are not home (or if they don’t want to pick up the phone!). • These and many other features have certainly increased the usefulness of telephones. Applications have majorly increased in popularity because of the iPhone App Store which allows iPhone users to download a variety of apps. there are also some negative side effects which include the dangers of cell phones being used while driving, cell phones being used for harassment and students cheating on tests by using their cell phone to access information. Cell phones are often banned in classrooms due to the distractions they can cause.

7. Computers now… Computers help people more, like children with schoolwork and homework and businesses, a lot of things wouldn’t be possible or very hard to do if we didn’t have modern computers. Modern computers are millions to billions of times more capable than the early machines, and take up a fraction of the space. Computers are one of the most amazing inventions created and were originally used for just working out equations but now have branched out into games, communication and more.

8. Facsimile (fax machine) now… The fax machine hasn’t become any more popular in time as computer e-mails have seemed to replace it. With e-mails, if the owner wants a hard copy they can just print it of the computer quickly and efficiently, if the hard copy gets ruined they can print another one. With the fax machine it doesn't hold information in it so you can’t re-print it.

9. The Change… Telephones The difference is that an olden day phone is used manually, it is connected to the operator. while the modern phone is electrical and is connected to phone wires, another difference is all of the new features, like caller ID, putting people on hold, the answering machine and ringtones . Olden day cell phones were only used for calling. Now a days cellphones are for calling, texting, videos, internet using, photos and also for apps. Fax machine Fax machines haven’t really changed in their time except for style, they look more modern. But, they haven’t increased much in capability. With printers being invented alongside the computer, fax machines are becoming less and less popular. Computers The first computers took up nearly the size of a room. And was only capable of writing and working out equations, with no other functions. Now there are many other utilities like photos, games, much more information and is now a form of communication.

10. Olden day telecommunication to modern day telecommunication • All the olden day computer could do was write and work out equations. • The olden day telephone would send you to an operator and the operator would say number please, you would tell her the number then she plug a chord into a switchboard that would be the person you were trying to call. • The cell phone use to be big and bulky. • Olden day and modern day telecommunication still mainly functions the same way. • Modern day telecommunication has many more functions. • The modern telephone sends you directly to the person you were trying to call. • Cellphones have become more slim light and portable. • On a cell phone you can text, send pictures and videos, play games and access the internet. • Olden day and modern day telecommunication still mainly functions the same way. • The style partly stays the same but is just made more modern.
