FLIPPED CLASSROOM ACTIVITY CONSTRUCTOR – USING EXISTING CONTENT
About you Dr. Vandana Dureja Associate Professor (Chemistry) 13 years of teaching experience GHRIET, Pune I wish to design a flipped classroom for the topic : Introduction to Polymers
Dr. Vandana Dureja Introduction to Polymers Engineering Chemistry Chemistry FE Students from all engineering branches SP Pune University/ GHRIET, Pune
Out-of-class Activity Design -1 Learning Objective(s) of Out-of-Class Activity After watching the videos the students shall be able to Define the basic terms of polymer chemistry (knowledge level) Explain the polymerization method (understand level) Describe reasons of good mechanical properties of polymers (Understand level) Elaborate the life cycle of polymers Key Concept(s) to be covered Functionality of polymers Addition & condensation polymerization
Video Selection Video taken from National Repository NPTEL Youtube Channel (https://www.youtube.com/user/nptelhrd) Lecture delivered by Prof.DibakarDhara (IIT Kharagpur) on Introduction to polymers Has been taken for the flipped classroom activity https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jSNlmOwpxYg&list=PLbMVogVj5nJT0slH3tuas5BIp1DG8ZpMj
Out-of-class Activity Design - 2 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jSNlmOwpxYg&list=PLbMVogVj5nJT0slH3tuas5BIp1DG8ZpMj Main Video Source URL License of Video CC-By- SA (reuse allowed) Mapping Concept to Video Source 43.82 min TOTAL DURATION
Out-of-class Activity Design - 3 Aligning Assessment with Learning Objective : Answers to be submitted before lecture session Expected activity duration 13 minutes
In-class Activity Design -1 Learning Objective(s) of In - Class Activity Illustrate reasons of high molecular weight of polymers (Analyze level) Synthesis of copolymers (Create level) Elaborate the lifecycle of polymers (Evaluate level) Key Concept(s) to be covered Structural & repeat units Properties of polymers & their applications
In-class Activity Design -2 Active Learning activity(ies) that you plan to do Peer Instruction Think-pair-share
In-class Activity Design -2 Peer Instruction Strategy – What Teacher Does Provides summary of polymers to connect Out-of-Class and In-Class activities. Poses two PI questions as an MCQ to students: Q1. If all structural units in a polymer are same then we get a ______ Copolymer Homo polymer Random polymer Resin
In-class Activity Design -2 Peer Instruction Strategy – What Teacher Does Q2. Polymers are top ranking materials because of which reason/s? Excellent strength : weight ratio Design flexibility Optical clarity All of these
In-class Activity Design -2 Peer Instruction Strategy – What Student Does • Student will write the answer to each question in his/her note book individually • They will then discuss with their peer and come to a concensus answer • All peer groups will share their answers & then listen to teacher’s final answer with appropriate justification
In-class Activity Design -2 TPS Strategy – What Teacher does Provide a situation Polymers have replaced conventional materials like wood, ceramics, metals etc. and are found everywhere. Besides the high end polymers or specialty polymers are finding specific use. Properties of polymers have brought them ahead in usage in the market.
In-class Activity Design -2 TPS Strategy – What Teacher does Think (`2 min) Instruction: What are the various structural properties of polymers that have made them a success story as a new material? Think individually & write down the structural properties responsible for their vast applications.
In-class Activity Design -2 TPS Strategy – What Teacher does Pair (~5 minutes) Instruction: Now pair up with your desk partner and compare your answers. Compile the final answer. Teacher goes around the class and ensures that all students are actively participating in the TPS activity.
In-class Activity Design -2 TPS Strategy – What Teacher does Share (~10 minutes) Teacher asks one of the group to share the answers to see various answers by students. Teacher listens to all answers provided after the TPS activity & gives feedback in the form of justification for the right answer
In-class Activity Design -2 Justify why the above is an active learning strategy • In the above strategy the students are required to go from low order cognitive skill (listening & comprehending knowledge) to higher order cognitive skills to (analyze, evaluate & create). They are required to move up through various levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy & correlate the out-of-class knowledge to solve the assignments. • Students also get feedback through their partners , class & the teacher while the TPS activity
