Life Cycle of a Butterfly*Click on picture to find out more • The First Stage: The Egg • The Second Stage: The Larva • The Third Stage: Pupa • The Fourth Stage: Adult Butterfly
First Stage: The Egg • Starts life as a very small, round oval, or cylindrical egg • If you look close enough, you can actually see the tiny caterpillar growing inside • Egg shape depends on the type of butterfly that laid the egg • *Click Next for more information
First Stage: The Egg • The eggs are laid on the leaves of plants • In order to find them, you would have to look very hard at many different leaves
Second Stage: The Larva • When the egg hatches, out comes butterfly larva which we call caterpillars • Do not stay in this stage for very long and all they do is eat • Once they eat, they instantly start growing and expanding. Their exoskeleton does not stretch or grow, so they grow by “molting” (shedding outgrown skin) several times • *Click Next for more information
Second Stage: The Larva • Once the egg hatches, caterpillars eat the leaf it was born onto because the mother butterfly needs to lay her eggs on the type of leaf the caterpillar will eat-each caterpillar type only likes certain types of leaves.
Third Stage: Pupa • When a caterpillar reaches their full length/ weight, they form themselves into a pupa also called a chrysalis • Inside of the pupa, the caterpillar is rapidly changing • *Click Next for more information
Third Stage: Pupa • Undergo transformation called metamorphosis • Tissue, limbs, and organs all change • *Click on link to view video!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DKjG1vm5F84
Fourth Stage: Adult Butterfly • When the butterfly first emerges both wings are soft and folded against its body • After it comes out, it will pump blood into the wings in order to get them working and flapping • Within a 3-4 hour period, the butterfly will master flying • *Click Next for more information
Fourth Stage: Adult Butterfly • Adult butterflies are constantly on the look out to reproduce • Once this happens, the cycle starts all over again. • *Click on link to view video! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gt-5lS9hJFA

Antennae • Moveable, segmented organs used for detecting smells at the tips and structures for sensing direction and position. • Antennae are used for the sense of smell and balance. • Butterflies have two segmented antennae with a small club at the end of each. • Larvae (caterpillars) have tiny sensory antennae
Thorax • Contains flight muscles • Anchor point for the legs • Expansion and contraction of muscles causes the wings to rise and fall at rates up to 1,000 beats per second
Compound Eye • Sensory organs on the head • Good at detecting color and nearby movement • Focus light onto a rhabdome (retina). Then the optic nerve carries this information to insect’s brain • See ultraviolent rays
Proboscis • Long, straw-like tube used for drinking • When a butterfly finds food, it first unfurls its mouthparts and then zips them together to form a channel. • The proboscis is particularly well adapted for reaching into flowers for nectar and for piercing fruit with its sharp tip. • When a butterfly is not feeding, it keeps its proboscis curled between its palpi (which are a pair of organs located on the front of an adult butterfly face).
Head • Location of its feeding and sensory structures • Contains brain, 2 compound eyes, proboscis, pharynx (the start of the digestive system), and the point of attachment of its two antennae
Legs • At the end of each six legs, all which are attached to the thorax, are taste organs used to find food • Legs touch food, a reflex causes its proboscis to uncoil • This lets the butterfly retrieve and swallow food • Detects and amplifies small vibrations to alert butterfly when animals approach
Abdomen • Once the butterfly swallows food, it is digested in organs located in the abdomen • Segmented tail area of an insect (11 segments) • An insect's abdomen contains its heart, Malpighian tubules, and reproductive organs • It is protected by an exoskeleton
Hindwing • Hind wings are the two lower wings • Closer to the tails and are shaped like fans or seashells • Colors and patterns come from layers of tiny scales. These scales protect wings and provide insulation • Scales on top-brightly colored • Scales underside-camouflage
Forewing • Two upper wings • Closer to butterfly’s head and are roughly triangular
Wing Veins • Once butterfly emerges from the chrysalis, wings have to expand and dry. To do this, it uses its body as a pump and forces fluid trough a series of tube-like veins • As the veins fill with fluid, they slowly stretch the surface of the wings
