White-Spotted Agrias • Found in Mexico through to Bolivia ; in primary and secondary rainforests • There are 5 species of Agrias • like to eat decomposing fruit and rotting fish • The are active only when it is hot out • Many bright colors: yellow, orange and blue
Red-spotted Purple • Found in North America • 20-30 species; 6 in North America • Live in open deciduous woodlands • Eat sap, dung, carrion, fermenting fruit, aphid secretions and flower nectar • dark colors; mostly a dark blue with hints of orange on the fore wing and color fades to the hind wing.
WING patterns! • Every butterfly has a special wing pattern • If you fold a butterflies wings together, the patterns are the same on both sides • In math class, this is called symmetry. • Butterflies use their patterns to blend into the environment for protection from birds and other animals who eat them • If you rub your fingers over the pattern on a butterfly wing, the pattern comes off and the butterfly can’t fly anymore.
What makes butterflies so cool?? • Butterflies range in size from a tiny 1/8 inch to a huge almost 12 inches. • Butterflies can see red, green, and yellow. • Butterflies cannot fly if their body temperature is less than 86 degrees. • Many butterflies can taste with their feet to find out whether the leaf they sit on is good to lay eggs on to be their caterpillars' food or not. • Butterflies and insects have their skeletons on the outside of their bodies, called the exoskeleton. This protects the insect and keeps water inside their bodies so they don’t dry out. • Butterflies don't have lungs. • Butterflies smell with their antennae.
