EIU Greeks Prepare for Greek Week Eastern Illinois University students prepare for Greek Week which will be held from April 6th through April 13th. Greek Life at Eastern Illinois University has become one of the most intriguing and recognized organizations on campus. Students in all fraternities and sororities have begun practicing for Airband, Greek Sing, Tugs, and Pyramids. It may seem like a week full of playful acts and procedures, although Greek Like at Eastern Illinois takes Greek Week very seriously. For Airband, Greeks practice dance moves and music performances that will be presented on Saturday April 6th, at 7:00 p.m. in Lantz Arena. For some students, this is the last time that they will have to present their best dance moves and music skills. Greek Sing coincides with the Airband performance. The following day at 1:00 p.m., fraternities and sororities will sing three songs together as a house at Lantz Arena. The prizes will be for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winner. In recent years, students have appeared in non traditional clothes and in baseball hats. This is just a humorous act as this is suppose to be a fun time for Greek Life.
Train Hard, Work Hard The final 2 performances, Tugs and Pyramids, are also very competitive. For tugs, both male and female students must be required to sustain a certain weight while they perform at Tugs. This weight requirement is set so that everything will be set at a fair level. Tugs is basically the same as the “pull rope” game. Approximately 10 to 12 members per Sorority and Fraternity stand on opposite sides of the pond in Eastern Illinois’ Square. They then pull the rope towards their side simultaneously, and the first member to go into the pond loses. It becomes incredibly competitive. In regards to Pyramids, 10 students stand form a pyramid by standing on top of one another. The team that forms the fastest pyramid wins. Nothing to Lose Terry Berglind, Junior and member of the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity states, “I have been doing all of these games and practices for three years now. It gets so tiring but I wouldn’t have it any other way. In some ways it really does bring Greek Life together and makes us practice what we have learned for so long.” Students have been preparing for Greek Week for over a month now. Every year since Greek Week was established in the early 1950′s, students have held a high regard in preparing for such a monumental week. It is what it is, it’s a Greek thing!
