  2. 1) The term “Native persons” applies to the Amerindians, Inuit and Métis people.

  3. 2) There are six different Native cultural zones in Canada: Arctic, Subarctic, Northeast, Great Plains, Plateau, and Northwest Coast.

  4. 3) In Canada, 44% of Native persons are living off reserves. Therefore, 56% of Native persons are living on reserves.

  5. 4) In Quebec, 1% of the population is Native.

  6. 5) The Amerindian people of Quebec are comprised of 10 nations spread over approximately 40 Native communities.

  7. 6) The Indian Act was signed in 1876.

  8. 7) The Indian Act originally prohibited Native people to practice their own religion.

  9. 8) The claims for rights made by Canadian Native peoples have three basic objectives: to maintain their identity and culture, to obtain larger territories and to enjoy greater autonomy.

  10. 9) The Canadian Native peoples claims for rights led to the passing of the Constitution Act, 1982, which upheld existing Native rights, their ancestral rights and rights that originated in earlier treaties.

  11. 10) For thousands of years, Native people have been gathering to pray, honour the dead, hunt, deliberate and trade. The names for such gatherings differ from one First Nation to another: sun dances, feasts, potlatches, powwows, etc.

  12. 11) The quality of life of Native people today is inferior to that of the Canadian population in general.

  13. 12) Life expectancy for Native persons is six years less than the Canadian average.

  14. 13) Nearly 60% of Native persons never finish high school, compared to 31% among the rest of Canadians.

  15. 14) The unemployment rate among Native persons is very close to 20%, around three times higher than that for the rest of the Canadian population (7.4%).

  16. 15) Approximately 40% of Native families live below the poverty line.
