  2. What is Translation - Definitions • Translation is a mental activity in which a meaning of given linguistic discourse is rendered from one language to another. It is the act of transferring the linguistic entities from one language in to their equivalents in to another language. Translation is an act through which the content of a text is transferred from the source language in to the target language (Foster, 1958). Ms. Rakhi L. What is Translation - Definitions • Translation is generally used to refer to all the process and methods used to convey the meaning of the source language in to the target language (Ghazala 1995). • Translation is the replacement of textual material in one language (SL) by equivalent textual material in another language (TL) (Catford). • Translation is, on the other hand, a product since it provides us with other different cultures, to ancient societies and civilization life when the translated texts reaches us (Yowell and Mutfah, 1999). • Source - https://translationjournal.net/October-2017/definition-of-translation.html Ms. Rakhi L. Common Terms • Context - Information outside of the actual text that is essential for complete comprehension. • Cultural adaptation - Adjustment of a translation to conform with the target culture. • Dialect - Variety of a language spoken by members of a particular locale and characterized by a unique vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation. Common Terms • Adaptation - Process of converting information into an appropriate format for the target language and culture. • Glocal - Combination of the words 'global' and 'local,' used to describe products or services intended for international markets and have been customized for different languages, countries, and cultures • Interpretation - Process of rendering oral spoken or signed communication from one language to another, or the output that results from this process Ms. Rakhi L. Common Terms • Native language - First language that a human learns naturally, usually since childhood. • Proofreading - Practice of checking a translated text to identify and correct spelling, grammar, syntax, and coherency and integrity errors, (usually carried out by a second linguist or translator. - not necessarily. Proofreading can be done by editors with no second language. • Source language - Original language of the text that to be translated. • Source text - Text to be translated. Ms. Rakhi L. Common Terms • Source text analysis - Analysis of the source text prior to translation that provides a better idea of the difficulty of the translation. • Syntax - Study of structure and elements that form grammatical sentences. • Target audience - Group of people who receive the information rendered by the interpreter in the target language. • Target language - Language into which the text is translated. Common Terms • Technical translation - Translation of technical texts, such as user or maintenance manuals, catalogues and data sheets. • Term - Word, phrase, symbol or formula that describes or designates a particular concept. • Transcreation - Process by which new content is developed or adapted for a given target audience instead of merely translating existing material.
