  2. 5 Ways IT professionals will want to change in 2015 • IT has been and will continue to be one of the most demanding fields in terms of changing what the public needs and, thus, what IT professionals should look to provide. If you work in the field, you have certainly noticed that skills which were the hottest thing five years ago might be close to irrelevant today. In order to help you stay on top of the most recent developments, we have comprised a list of five areas you will definitely want to look into for 2015 if you haven’t already.

  3. 1) Security • The first place in this list should definitely not come as a surprise. A vast number of security issues have been made public, from open-source troubles to breaches into internal servers of major companies like Sony. Security is definitely one of the most hyped things right now. Skills like threat management, being able to tell where an attack comes from and what its scope might be are more important than ever.

  4. 2) Programming/application development • According to a Computerworld survey, programmers and web developers are going to be the most sought-after IT professionals of 2015. Openings here are most likely. Specialists say that companies are not just looking for people with some development background, but rather the experience to handle big scale projects.

  5. 3) Fixing issues rather than devices • This is another trend that has been showing for some time, but some IT professionals still don’t realize. Computers and mobile devices have gotten very cheap. Compare their price to that of 10 years ago and you will probably reach the conclusion that is rarely worth it to actually repair a computer anymore. Most people just buy a new one. Support should, then, focus more on fixing specific issues like network connectivity, login problems and dealing with software that doesn’t function properly.

  6. 4) Database management • Big Data has been one of the most mentioned words IT conventions in 2014. Companies are increasingly getting their hands on vast amounts of data. More often than not, they don’t really know how to best utilize it. Database management, administration and design are becoming increasingly more important to enterprises over the world.

  7. 5) Diversifying into management • Last but not least, IT is no longer a business where a genius comes up with a new device in his garage and manages a breakthrough. Today, the field is so saturated and competitive that project management is absolutely essential. Diversifying into softer skills and being able to responsibly handle a project and make sure it is completed on time while also understanding the subject matter is becoming invaluable in IT.
