WOD- Carbohydrate Any of a large group of organic compounds in foods and living tissues and including sugars, starch, and cellulose. They contain hydrogen and oxygen in the same ratio as water (2:1) and typically can be broken down to release energy in the body. Wednesday November 13, 2013 • WOD- Amino Acid • the building blocks of proteins; some can be synthesized in the body (nonessential amino acids) and others cannot and are thus essential components of the diet (essential amino acids)
Thursday November 14, 2013 • WOD- Fatty Acid • Use your vocabulary cards Fatty acids are the building blocks of the fat in our bodies. During digestion, the body breaks down fats into fatty acids, which can then be absorbed into the blood. Fatty acids function in energy storage. If glucose (a type of sugar) isn't available for energy, the body uses fatty acids to fuel the cells instead.
Agreement Circle • Energy is stored in an organism. • When energy changes from one form to another, heat is usually given off. • Sunlight is radiant energy. • Digestion is a complex process controlled by your brain • Plants make their own food, whereas animals obtain food by eating other organisms
Friday November 15, 2013 • WOD- Calorie • the amount of heat (energy) required to raise the temperature of 1 gram (g) of water 1 degree Celsius (°C).
