About Christopher Columbus • Christopher Columbus was born in the large Italian port of genoa in 1451 • Columbus moved to Spain and put his proposal to King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella • Christopher Columbus wanted to prove the world was round. • He wanted to find a new route to the spice islands • He wanted to spread Christianity • He had three ships . The Nina, Pinta and the Santa Maria as the flag ship. He asked the Pinzon brothers to sail the Nina and the Pinta ship. • At first they sailed to the Canary Islands where they took on supplies and carried out repairs to the ship
Dangers that he faced • Disease was a big killer. Captains often carried twice the men they needed because they knew so many would die of illnesses • Storms could lead to shipwreck and drowning • Sailors often found themselves attacked by hostile natives • Crews could also suffer from thirst and hunger when they ran out of food and water • There was fear for sea monsters, falling off the edge of the earth
The country's he sailed to • In all, Columbus sailed on three further voyages. He explored central and South America, but he never reached North America. He discovered Puerto Rico, Trinidad, Jamaica, Panama and the mouth of the Orinoco River
His second voyage • On his second voyage (1493 – 96) his fleet was made up of seventeen ships and over 1,000 settlers came with him. His search for gold was successful when he found a large amount on the island of Hispaniola
His third voyage • His third voyage (1498 – 1500) ended in disaster when he was sent back to Spain in chains. He had quarreled with the governor of Hispaniola sent by Ferdinand and Isabella
His fourth voyage • During the fourth voyage (1502 – 04) he warned a different governor of Hispaniola of an approaching hurricane. The governor didn’t Listen and 24 ships were lost. Columbus regarded his fourth voyage as his greatest • However no matter how hard he searched for the passage to the east, Columbus never reached china. He returned to Spain for a final time in 1504. he became very ill and in 1506 he died at Valladolid. He still that he had found a new route to Asia. Many people began to believe that he had in fact discovered a new world
