Intermediate English (ENG100 X 2) This course introduced students to an intermediate level of English and provided them with a strong foundation in the language. It mostly comprised of writing and communication skills, an emphasis on functional English, systematic vocabulary work and a strong component of grammar. • Major topics covered • Grammar: The tenses • Reported speech • Passive voice • Conditionals
English for Business Communication (ENG101 X 3) Drawing on the extensive media assets of the Financial Times and other sources, this course offered a highly authoritative and flexible range of material for business English learners. This course was designed to develop real-life communicative skills and powers of self expression through constant real-time interaction. • Major topics covered • Writing techniques in Business Communication • Memo / Email / Letter writing • Advertising • Globalization • Work ethics • English Writing (ENG102 X 2) This course encouraged learners to develop self expression through either formal or colloquial English. Academic English (LAN101 X 3) The primary focus of this course was to encourage students to engage critically with the language, whether spoken or written, and to question the validity of ideas. Emphasis was placed on recognizing fact from opinion and detecting author bias. • Major topics covered • Persuasive (Oral) Presentations • Film viewing • Drawing inferences • Critical reading • Bias in writing • Technical Communication & Technical Writing (LAN104 X 2) This course was designed to meet the basic communication needs of Civil Engineering and Architecture students. As such, it covered issues of purpose and style while allowing students plenty of focused practice with short writing exercises. The course was organized to review the basic elements of written communication that are involved in technical writing tasks and engage students in editing, revising, and evaluating technical writing. • Major topics covered • Manual instructions • How to make a Poster • Poster (Oral) Presentations • Memo writing • IEEE referencing system • Paragraph organization
General Advanced English (LAN100 X 2) This was an integrated skills course designed to help students build upon their existing competence in English. The course focused on the reading, writing and speaking skills students need to function effectively in an academic environment, with special focus on vocabulary acquisition. Students were encouraged to improve their oral communication through delivering informative presentations. • Major topics covered • Oral Informative Presentations • Modes of writing • Reading comprehension • Determining authors’ purposes • Business Communication for Management (LAN201 X 1) This course aimed at helping students become more efficient speakers and writers, preparing them for challenges at the workplace.
